Mortadella

2007

Laminated photograph under plexiglass
85 x 67 cm

The ultimate vanity, Mortadella is made of recomposed flesh to figure a human skull, an image of our finitude. The skull image — used since Antiquity, in mosaic, in pencil or in oil — has been laser-engraved onto a real slice of mortadella several centimetres thick. This piece of Italian charcuterie is preserved through a photograph laminated under plexiglass.
