Age-old traditions are disappearing in the wake of colonisation and then globalisation. Their chief magical artefacts, such as masks, are scattered through public and private collections and lose their function. This series of traditional wooden masks is reproduced in “Bone China”, a material developed in England in the 18th century to imitate Chinese porcelain; it contains around 30% bone ash. By using Bone China, the artist summons the fragility and the look of bone — relics of a magical past — and, on the other hand, a material born of global trade.
